Sustainable procurement, and particularly modern slavery, was the hottest topic in procurement until March – when Covid19 hit hard.
The momentum built on sustainable procurement policies, even compliance programmes, feels stalled in many quarters.
Businesses now struggling to survive might now be de-prioritising less vital initiatives and as we clamber out of the pandemic and its direct consequences?
So, how can we balance sustainable procurement ideals, and the polices relevant to your organisations that we had a hand in justifying, with the practical realities of a post-Covid “new normal” business environment of deep recession?
What can we still do with limited resources? What does a maximum (or minimum) effort look like now? How can we prioritise social v ethical v environment procurement against, perhaps, indigenous procurement policies and economic development initiatives or social procurement policies that could directly create jobs? And is not safety the new top priority for everyone, what does this mean for sustainable procurement in future?
